James Vincent McMorrow
New video for ‘Cavalier’ released today
New album – ‘Post Tropical’ – released Australia 29 November
James Vincent McMorrow has unveiled the video for ‘Cavalier’, the first single from his forthcoming second album, ‘Post Tropical’ Australia will be the first to hear the work, with the album released3rd January. ‘Cavalier’ recently received its premiere across Noisey/Zane Lowe and has since reached #1 on Hype Machine, with Pitchfork calling it “earthy, sensuous...announces the artist’s foray into new sonic territory.” Following the platinum-selling debut album,"Early In The Morning", James is returning to stages in Sydney and Melbourne for his own headline shows (tix here), alongside appearances at The Falls and Southbound festivals.
The striking video for ‘Cavalier’ is the first of a trilogy of short films by acclaimed director Aoife Mcardle (Beck, Jon Hopkins, Anna Calvi). Describing the clip, shot in America, James says: “It's an honour to be able to work with people like Aoife on videos” “It's her reaction to the song. She heard something in it, the melody, the lyric, the rhythm, and this is what she created in response. I love it. It's dark in places, vivid and bright in others, it gives my song another dimension and aspect”
The wider reaction to ‘Cavalier’ is arguably the quickest of McMorrow’s career to date. A brooding twist on the slow-jam, the song builds quietly from hushed keys and hand-claps to soaring brass, drums and James’ idiosyncratic falsetto. The song was recorded, together with the album as a whole, on a pecan farm half a mile from the Mexican border, where the low frequencies of passing freight trains vibrated in the studio, briefly disturbing the birds in the rafters.
